Southern Poverty Law Center's Megan Squire Uncovers Far Right Extremist Network Structures and Financing
We were happy to host Dr. Megan Squire to kick off our Collaboratory Against Hate (CAH) Speaker Series for the spring semester on February 22nd. Dr. Squire is an expert in using data science to counter extremist groups, currently leading a data lab at the Southern Poverty Law Center (SPLC). She presented her work studying the network structure and financing of far-right extremist groups using publicly available data from social media, payment, and live-streaming platforms. Her findings reveal how the 2017 Charlottesville rally connected far-right ideologies, how the Proud Boys organized before January 6, and how such groups use super chats and cryptocurrency to raise and hide money streams. The event was well-attended by CAH researchers in person and on Zoom.
